Ore. school board wants time to implement common core in ratings
The Portland School Board in Oregon unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday asking the state to delay the use of tests aligned with Common Core State Standards in teacher and school evaluations. Results from last year's pilot of Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium tests at 24 schools won't be available until December, which does not leave enough time to act on the results before statewide testing in spring 2015, the board argued. Students have petitioned administrators, and teachers have solicited donations for laptops in their successful quest to bring computer science courses to several San Francisco Bay Area high schools in California. Schools in the area, a technology hotbed, have lacked teachers and classes in computer science, in part, because it is not a state-required course.
