Students use math skills to construct home sweet home
Fifth-grade students at a school in New Hampshire recently used their math skills -- and candy -- to design and build houses made from assorted confections. Students began designing their houses during the week of Thanksgiving, creating blueprints and ordering candy construction items. "We incorporated specific math skills and looked at the standards we needed to be addressing and worked from there," teacher Lynda Schmidt said. SeacoastOnline (Portsmouth, N.H.) 4 common blended-learning models
School districts nationwide are integrating blended learning into the classroom, often using one of four key methods. The rotation model -- the most common method -- involves students in one or two classes rotating between online and in-person instruction. Some schools also have adopted the flex model, which integrates blended instruction into every course. Other models include the a la carte model, which allows students to take individual courses online; and the enriched-virtual model, similar to the flex model, but students do not go to the school building every day. About 60% of N.J.'s public schools to preview new, online tests
Students in some schools in New Jersey will be involved in spring testing of new Common Core State Standards assessments developed by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. Education officials have tested the exams in some schools, but this spring about 60% of schools will get to try out the assessments in an effort to give more educators and students a chance to interact with the format and material before the official rollout during the 2014-15 school year. What STEM education looks like in some Colo. schools
From the science of cooking to underwater robotics, students at Preston Middle School in Fort Collins, Colo., have access to various learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. The STEM programs at the school are not an anomaly in the state, as more schools have adopted lessons that include one or more of these disciplines. "It's just an enhancement across the board," principal Scott Nielsen said of the middle school's program. "It's really become about thinking, the nature of thinking," he said.
