A Virginia high school revamped its library to become a center for student and teacher collaboration. Changes include suspending rules on "being quiet," opening the library during lunch and other non-class times, adding computers with music-making and gaming software, and the creation of a "maker" space with a 3D printer. The four elementary schools in a New Jersey district are restructuring their schedules to give teachers time each day for collaborative planning and professional development as part of an instructional improvement plan. Each school also will receive an instructional coach to work with teachers across grade levels during common planning times and technology teachers to help integrate laptops into some classrooms. Google has announced a $50 million initiative to teach girls to code and help close the gender gap in engineering and computer science. The announcement follows recent reports that only 17% of Google's technology employees are women.
