Ohio district finds success with math-coaching program
Educators and students in a school district in Ohio are receiving extra math help through a three-year program in collaboration with Ohio State University. Tutors from the Mathematics Coaching Program work with teachers in the classroom and provide extra math lessons designed to help students think through problems and explain their answers. Why giving students a chance to "fail" improves their learning
Students who first struggle -- and even fail to solve -- challenging math problems on their own are better able to learn and transfer that knowledge when faced with similar problems later, according to the work of Manu Kapur, a researcher at the Learning Sciences Lab at the National Institute of Education of Singapore. Kapur's research outlines three steps to help students learn from what researchers call "productive failure," including giving them problems that "challenge but do not frustrate" them and allowing them a chance to explain their reasoning. Pa. school board approves summer-school math classes
A Pennsylvania school board has approved plans to offer high-school math courses during the summer. The program will offer advanced and honors geometry, advanced algebra and Keystone math classes for students needing to retake the state exam. Board members noted that it was best for students to take Keystone remediation classes in the summer instead of dropping electives to study during the school year. Expanded-learning programs provide lessons in common core
Expanded-learning programs, including summer and after-school programs, may provide lessons in implementation of the Common Core State Standards, some educators in California said. Some said lessons they teach during summer programs, which often involve more student-driven learning, align with the common core's emphasis on collaboration and critical thinking. Neb. university hosts tech program for middle-, high-school girls
Thirty middle-school girls will spend five days learning about mobile applications, cybersecurity and other technology fields during CodeCrush, held at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The girls, who were nominated by their schools for the program, also will hear from women in tech fields about career options. Organizers say they're hoping that if the girls are inspired, they'll share that inspiration with classmates back at their own schools. Omaha World-Herald (Neb.) (2/26)

Nev. education board lowers passing grades for math proficiency
The Nevada State Board of Education on Wednesday voted to lower the minimum passing score for a math-proficiency exam required for high-school graduation. The board made the move after a consensus was reached that the test is not aligned with new Common Core State Standards. Current sophomores will be the last to take the proficiency tests, which will be replaced with end-of-course exams. Las Vegas Review-Journal (2/26)
