Minn. district's digital-learning plan focuses on personalized learning
Students at five schools in a Minnesota school district are using mobile devices to enhance learning. The district's rollout of a one-to-one program is part of a larger plan to use technology in the classroom. Students in schools where the program is being piloted are using applications and programs to complete math and reading assignments and access homework during snow days. Even with the district's emphasis on technology, educators stress that students also have options to use traditional tools -- pencil and paper -- to complete assignments. Schools anticipate bulk of E-Rate funding to come in 2015
School districts face increasing pressure to upgrade technology to accommodate new, technology-enhanced lessons and administer online exams aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Officials say they plan to use an anticipated $2 billion from the federal E-Rate program to improve high-speed bandwidth in schools. However, the bulk of the funds are not expected to reach schools until 2015. Some say the delay could give schools time to plan accordingly, assess their needs and prioritize spending. University hosts "girls day" to engage high-schoolers in STEM
To remind high-school girls that an engineering career can be interesting and purposeful, Middle Tennessee State University held a "girls day" at its Department of Engineering Technology. Girls made their own cellphone chargers to help them realize they can develop the skills to make something useful. "If you've grown up being told that science and engineering are not for you, then you don't develop that confidence," professor Cliff Welborn said. WSMV-TV (Nashville, Tenn.) (2/24)

Board: Md. not ready to evaluate teachers based on test scores
The Maryland State Board of Education voted Tuesday to ask the federal government for a delay in using exam scores to evaluate teachers. Officials said schools are shifting to the Common Core State Standards, but the exams are not ready. Officials said they need two years of data from the common-core-aligned exams to properly evaluate teachers based on the results. The state agreed to use test scores to evaluate teachers as part of its application for federal Race to the Top funding. The Baltimore Sun/Inside Ed blog (2/25)
