| N.J. district offers advanced math in 8th grade More than half of the eighth-graders at a school district in New Jersey are taking ninth-grade algebra for the 2013-14 school year. That's up from 29% in 2010-11. "The whole idea is that by taking the ninth-grade course in the eighth-grade, it allows the students room in the schedule to take advanced placement classes," Superintendent Maria Nuccetelli said. | Ideas, resources for writing lesson plans Noting there is no "right" way to plan a lesson, instructional coach Lily Jones has compiled in this blog post a number of links to online resources and templates to help educators write plans aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Her post includes the Teaching for Understanding Framework, using backward planning; a template that can be added to Microsoft Word; and a Pinterest board that features lesson-plan ideas. "When writing lesson plans, sometimes using a template can help focus you on components of lessons you may have overlooked," she writes. In one school's Principles of Engineering class, enrollment of female students has grown from 0 to 25% since 2007.
