How principal feedback affects student performance
Meaningful instructional feedback from school leaders can help improve student achievement, cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham writes in this blog post. Here, Willingham, a professor and director of graduate studies in psychology at the University of Virginia, shines a light on recent research about the role of principal walkthroughs and feedback in schools. In the study, he notes, researchers found that student outcomes improved when principals coached teachers -- especially in math -- and when they evaluated teachers and curricula. What BYOD looks like in one Ga. school district
Bring-your-own-device programs can present a number of challenges, including ensuring equitable access to devices and Internet and teaching students how to use their devices for learning. This blog post highlights how a school district in Georgia overcame these and other obstacles. To help ensure access to Internet service, the district has partnered with local businesses to expand the number of places in the community where students can access a free wireless Internet connection. High-school program aims to prepare more students for college
Education leaders at a school district in Minnesota are piloting a program aimed at preparing more students for college-level work. Under the Bridge to College program -- being rolled out in one high school in the district -- ninth-graders will take a three-trimester algebra course and sophomores will take a three-trimester English course. "If we are successful, hundreds more students will graduate from Anoka High School -- eventually all our high schools -- ready for postsecondary education," said Jeff McGonigal, associate superintendent of high schools. Data: K-12 schools investing more in print, digital materials
Sales of digital and print materials for K-12 schools have risen for the first time since the Great Recession, according to Jay Diskey, executive director of the pre-K-12 learning group for the Association of American Publishers. Overall, the group's data show that sales in 2013 were up 7% from the previous year -- a number not hit since 2005, Diskey noted in a recent webinar. He attributed the increase in purchasing to rebounding state and local budgets, as well as an increase in spending on print and digital materials aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Calif. middle-school students use 3D technology to innovate
Brian Donnelly, an eighth-grade teacher in California, is participating in the educational initiative Design the Future, sponsored by the software company Autodesk. The program provides secondary-school teachers with free access to 3D technology, and students use the design software for projects related to entertainment, manufacturing, engineering, construction and civil infrastructure. In Donnelly's class, students created a model of a boat to demonstrate buoyancy. Supporters say the technology helps promote thinking and innovation. TakePart.com (1/6)

Not all states receptive to high-tech overhaul of GED
The move to a computer-only General Educational Development test has led to some competition for the 71-year-old exam, which has long been the measure of high-school equivalency for students who leave school before graduation. At least nine states have dropped the GED altogether and others are offering multiple options. California education officials are weighing options for the test, which is taken by 57,000 people a year. Los Angeles Times (tiered subscription model) (1/5)
