Artists teach students real-world uses for math
A school district in Illinois has invited 20 artists to help teach art-inspired math lessons to middle-school students. Students learn about angles and ratios and other real-world math applications through hands-on projects such as building picture frames. "I want them to see that math is all around us," math teacher Amy Blume said. "There's so much more to math than what they see." Rockford Register Star (Ill.) (1/25)

W.Va. district's program identifies where students are in math, reading
Teachers in Marshall County Schools in West Virginia have implemented the Support for Personalized Learning program to help students stay on track with reading and math goals and to identify those who are struggling -- intervening before they fall further behind. The program places students into one of three categories based on formative assessments -- those who do not need further intervention, those who need some intervention and those who need intensive support. Fla. district aims to make computer science a core subject
Beginning next year, a Florida school district will overhaul its computer science curriculum as part of a partnership with Code.org. Plans call for the curriculum to be expanded with the goal of making computer science a core subject and for students to be taught how to build technology, not just use it. Officials said the partnership also includes training -- primarily for science, technology and math teachers -- which will begin in the spring. Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) (1/21)

Budget cuts bring changes to summer school
Budget cuts have been forcing some school districts to scale back summer programs, while other districts are changing the traditional model by partnering with community organizations to make summer learning more engaging and to focus on at-risk students. A Minneapolis Public Schools program for elementary- and middle-school students includes lessons about water ecology and local history.
